Investing in Equitable Nonprofit Leadership Transitions
Leading Forward is a funder community advocating for better support of executive leadership transitions and succession planning in order to strengthen the capacity and resilience of community-led nonprofits.
What We Do
We advocate for grantee-centered funder practices to support healthy nonprofit leadership transitions, particularly those involving leaders who come from the communities they serve. We provide resources and spaces for funder learning and reflection and shift narratives in philanthropy so that funders can better accompany grantee partners before, during, and after leadership transitions.
Why It’s Important
Organizations in transition – especially those led by executives who come from the communities they serve – are critically under-funded at the very moment that they are most vulnerable. They often face a trust gap and a “wait and see” approach from funders just when deeper trust and support are needed most. We want to radically change this approach to resourcing leadership transitions and work to catalyze a broader cultural shift within philanthropy.
